SCRIPTURAL AND COMMENTARIAL TRANSLATIONS

In order to fulfil the wish of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Thinle Lhundup’s wish to “put back Marpa in his proper place of honor”, the Marngok group and many other individuals worldwide have been working on the scriptural sources of the sādhanas composed within the Marngok Tradition in order to foster a better understanding of the Hevajra cycle.

The Hevajratantra Root-text

The first text offered upon request is the Hevajratantra itself. It was the express request of His Holiness to provide a multi-language version of the Two-Part Tantra (this is the traditional name of the Tantra in Tibetan, which reflects the fact that it has two main parts). Two versions have been produced, one with Sanskrit, Tibetan and English, and another with also Chinese. As this fourth language created some difficulties in the layout, we have kept two versions for those who don’t need Chinese in particular.

The origin of the various versions are as follows:

  • The Sanskrit text is as edited by Harunaga Isaacson and distributed in the form of a blue booklet at the Hevajra event in 2019. It was transliterated in Roman characters by Klaus Dieter-Mathes.
  • The Tibetan version was translated by Drokmi Lotsāwa and preserved in the Derge Kangyur (D417 and D418).
  • The Chinese version is based on the tenth century Chinese translation prepared by Dharmapāla (963–1058) and edited by Palme Khyentse Rinpoche in Summer 2024.

For the English version, the first draft translation was realized by Wiesiek Mical for 84000. Wiesiek prepared it based on the Sanskrit version of the Hevajratantra, and Ratnākaraśānti’s commentary called Muktāvalī. The translation is still being edited for publication by 84000, and Wiesiek updated his translation since then. He simultaneously shared his translation of the root-text with Sonam Spitz for his translation of Marpa’s Hevajratantra commentary Bum chung nyi ma, Thomas Doctor for his forthcoming translation of Ngok Zhedang Dorje’s commentary Rin chen rgyan ‘dra (Like a Precious Ornament), and with Klaus Dieter-Mathes for his translation of Saroruhavajra’s commentary Padminī, also forthcoming on 84000.co. Although the work of these four translators was used to produce the present version, it relies mostly on the work by Thomas Doctor (with the revisions of Ryan Conlon), modified in many places by Sonam Spitz and Cécile Ducher to accord with Marpa’s ’Bum chung nyi ma and personal preferences of terminology.

Marpa’s Commentary to the Hevajratantra

The second text available upon request is Marpa’s commentary to the Hevajratantra entitled The Sun [Illuminating] the Shortened Hundred Thousand (‘Bum chung nyi ma), as presented by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Thinle Lhundup together with the commentary by Ngok Chödor. He published the original Tibetan in 2004 and has revised the commentary several times since then.

The first draft of the present translation was completed by Sonam Spitz in spring 2021 after one year of editing and translating the Tibetan text, generously supported by the Tara Foundation. This was followed by several sessions of revision and editing with Cécile Ducher during the years 2022–2024, which improved the draft significantly.

Moreover, the translation benefitted greatly from the kind and constant support received from several of the leading Western scholars of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism that are working on Hevajra-related texts. We are extremely grateful to Wiesiec Mical, Klaus-Dieter Mathes, Elizabeth Callahan, Thomas Doctor, and Ryan Conlon for their generous help. Likewise, David Snellgrove’s pioneering 1959 translation and study of the tantra remains helpful.

  • His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Thinle Lhundup’s commentary on the Hevajra long sādhana (taught in Milarepa Retreat Zentrum in 2023)
  • Marpa’s commentary on the Ḍākinīvajrapañjaratantra, entitled Life-tree of the Ḍākinī Vajra Grid
  • Ngok Zhedang Dorjé’s commentary on the Ḍākinīvajrapañjaratantra, entitled Moonbeams, an Explanation of the Ḍākinī Vajra Grid.

Independently of the work of the Marngok Committee, we are expecting the publication of several translations that will significantly improve our access to Marpa’s Tradition of Hevajra:

  • Thomas Doctor’s translation of Ngok Zhedang Dorjé’s commentary on the Hevajratantra, entitled Like a Jewel Ornament
  • Thomas Doctor’s translation on the Ḍākinīvajrapañjaratantra for 84000.
  • The translation of the Hevajratantra itself for 84000. This translation has been ongoing for several years and has had contribution from many scholars, including Wiesiek Mical and several people working under the direction of Professor Harunaga Isaacson at the University of Hamburg. It is expected that when this translation is published, it will revolutionize the field.

These texts are available for free but have required considerable time and effort to create. We thank the Tara Foundation and the Garchen Foundation for their unrelenting support.

Some of these articles are academic works, some for a very specialized audience and some for the general public. Others are non-academic writings, which nonetheless can have a lot of value for Dharma practitioners.
